Ethics & Community - 1 Lesson

This module is ideal as preparation and can be carried out independently by the teacher. Students will be confronted with the opportunities and challenges of technological assistance systems and their impact on individuals and society.

Nature & Technology – 3 Lessons

Preparatory lesson:
During a lesson, knowledge about the structure of the human body (skeleton, muscles, nerves) and how they function in the healthy body is repeated or introduced in a playful way. This lesson can be done independently by the teacher using the materials. Alternatively, the introduction can be done by the coaches.

Double lesson:
In this double lesson, students learn what it means when the interaction of the skeleton, muscles and nerves no longer works. The Flexo - an elbow exoskeleton specially developed for CYBATHLON @school - is used. The EMG sensors and the force sensor of the Flexo can measure forces and muscle contraction. These signals are used to control the Flexo. The students not only learn how an exoskeleton works, but also expand their knowledge about the interaction of muscles and nerves.

Movements & Sport – 2 Lessons

In this module, students gain alternative movement experiences by solving tasks with prosthetic legs and arms, riding in wheelchairs, or completing a course blindfolded. The courses consist of everyday tasks that show how much of a challenge they can be for people with disabilities. In addition to the coaches, the students are supervised by ambassadors who themselves have a disability. These ambassadors support the students with tips and tricks. Afterwards, they lead a discussion round, talk about their everyday lives and answer questions that one would otherwise not dare to ask.

Product Development – 7 to 10 Lessons

In this module, the students develop and program their own gripper for the Flexo elbow exoskeleton. To do this, they first clarify the needs of the users. The students implement everything themselves, from initial ideas on paper to prototypes to the finished product, and learn common methods of iterative rapid prototyping such as lasercutting. The gripper is then attached to the flexo and the sensors for measuring muscle activity are programmed so that the gripper can be controlled with them. In the final competition, the teams can demonstrate their developments. In this way, the students are not only sensitized to the challenges of people with disabilities but also learn to develop and test a product in teamwork.

The module can be combined with a practical 3D printing block and the module "Movement and Sport" to a 1.5-day workshop.

Mind-Up game

The card game Mind Up will be given away free of charge after the workshop. It is ideal for follow-up work and addresses many topics again. It conveys knowledge about the inclusion of people with disabilities and creates a basis for discussion about ethical issues.
The students are once again confronted with the barriers of people with disabilities. In the long term, the game should help to contribute to a change in thinking and to equality.
